NAIROBI, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) — Kenya’s national sitting volleyball team members left for Rwanda on Friday after staging a sit in at the Ministry of Sports office claiming alleged discrimination.

The team members demanded money for the upcoming Africa Sitting Volleyball Championships scheduled for Sept.14-18 in Kigali complaining that they have been discriminated against in comparison to their able-bodied counterparts who receive total support during preparations for international assignments.

“Since we started preparing for the continental championships in February, we have not received any support from the relevant quarters to an extent that we even went without meals during residential training,” the President of Kenya Paralympic Volleyball Federation (KPVF), Polycarp Mboya, said.

“We are embarking on a 17-hour journey by road to the competition venue yet we are expected to perform wonders after demanding basic things like playing kit,” Mboya complained.

Kenya will field 12 players in each of the men’s and women’s teams for the continental event with the aim of qualifying for the Sitting Volleyball World Championships to be held in July 2018 in the Netherlands.
