The Netherlands played some closely controlled sitting volleyball in the first set, but the American’s never looked like letting go of the first set or the match.

Brazil fielded a young team to give them experience against an under-resourced Finnish Team. A number of attacking errors from the Finns just gave the Brazilians point in the first set. In the second set the Finns played better and put a bit more pressure on the Brazilians. At the scores tied at 16-16, the momentum changed for Brazil and the Finns had difficulties to keep up. In the third set, the two teams were level at 7-7, and then the Finns turned off as it was soon 22-7. In response, Helena Skogstrom served 9 consecutive times to bring the scores closer to 16-22, but it wasn’t enough as the Brazilians held on to win the match.

Russia looked flat during the first two sets, with setter and captain Tatiana making a number of errors on the court. The match looked rather one sided and it looked like it was be a quick ending. In the third set, it was the only chance Russia would have into the final, and slowly, their performance worthy of their European title was appearing. Fast attacks seemed to make the difference for the Russians as they started to pressurise the Chinese and they took the match into a tie break. But some clever attacking option strategies put China into a commanding 7-1 lead in the 5th set. Yuhong Sheng was given 6 balls and she scored 6 times off it. No comeback was enough for the Russians as Sheng dominated from various positions around the court.

Brazil pulled off an amazing win against Russia, and they looked to continue their impressive form when the played against the Iran. The last time Iran were not in the Finals of a major championship was back in the 2002 World championship, and that was a one off as they have shared dominance with Bosnia since records began. Having won the first two sets, it looks like a possibility that 2014 could be the second time in history. In a fightback, Iran led 18-9 in the third set, Brazil crawled back into the game with errors by Iranians trying to get the wipe off, but being unsuccessful. This brought the match closer to 15-18, but once again, Iran kept their cool and continued to take the match into a fourth set. The fourth set started off closely, but Iran ran away with the set. With both teams back at full strength, a deciding set provided an entertaining end to an epic start. Scores were tied up until 5-5, but Brazil squeezed 3 consecutive points as the teams changed ends, and this was enough as Brazil won 15-12
