RWANDA women and Egypt men’s teams were crowned champions of this year’s African Sitting Volleyball Championships on Sunday evening at Amahoro Indoor Stadium.
The 5-day continental tournament started on September 13.
Rwanda defeated Egypt in straight sets 3-0 (25-14, 25-20 and 25-10) in 64 minutes to clinch the women’s title while Egypt returned the favour by beating the hosts, also in three sets, 25-16, 25-8 and 25-14, to win the men’s crown.
Both countries qualified for the 2018 World Championships to be held in the Netherlands. Morocco finished in third place in men’s category while Kenya took bronze in women’s tournament.
The competition attracted eleven teams, 7 teams in male category and 4 in women’s. The men’s teams were drawn in 2 groups while female teams were in one group playing against each other on a round-robin.
The men’s Group A included Kenya, South Africa, Morocco and the hosts Rwanda while Group B comprised DR Congo, Algeria and Egypt. The four women’s teams were; Kenya, Egypt, DRC and Rwanda.
The African Sitting Volleyball Championships in Kigali also served as continental qualifiers for the 2018 World Sitting Volleyball Championship to be held in the Netherlands.
