The Netherlands will host the 2018 Sitting Volleyball World Championships
World ParaVolley has now confirmed that the Dutch National Volleyball Federation, Nevobo, will organise the 2018 Sitting Volleyball World Championships, for women and men.
The announcement was made at the 2016 General Assembly, just prior to the start of the World ParaVolley Intercontinental in the Chinese city of Anji, where the last team for each gender hopes to qualify for the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The World ParaVolley Board met prior to the assembly and designated the next organiser of their most prestigious tournament, the Sitting Volleyball World Championships, following a presentation made by the Federation. The Netherlands was confirmed, with the host cities and venues still subject to World ParaVolley approval.
“We are pleased to be able to confirm, in principle, the appointment of the Netherlands as the hosts of the 2018 Sitting Volleyball World Championships”, says WPV President Barry Couzner. “I am sure that I speak for all the members of World ParaVolley when I say that we are excited about the possibilities presented by the event, which will showcase our sport live across the country, as well as provide unprecedented coverage on-line to the watching world.”
The Dutch federation is already negotiating with several candidate host cities. More details about this global event will follow.
This is not the first time that the Sitting Volleyball World Championships will be held in the Netherlands, previously there has been:
- 1983 – The Netherlands – Delden (men)
- 1990 – The Netherlands – Assen (men)
- 2000 – The Netherlands – Maastricht (women)
- 2006 – The Netherlands – Roermond (men & women)
The Dutch volleyball federation Nevobo continues to present itself as an organiser of major volleyball events. After already winning the bid for the 2018 European Championships Beach Volleyball, it is their intention to organise yet another event of outstanding quality, following to the 2015 World Championships Beach Volleyball and the 2015 Volleyball European Championship Women.
