Great Britain win their first pool game. Against a loud home supporting crowd, Team GB bounced back on the brink of a 2-0 deficit to win 3-1. With the score at 22-24, GB’s Jodi Hill attacked the ball into the block, in what looked like sealing the 2nd set for Poland. However in all the noise, it was not clear that the referee had noticed the tall Polish blocker had actually lifted her bottom from the floor while blocking and therefore, gave GB a point at a critical point of the match. 2nd captain Vicky Widdup went to rotate to serve at 23-24 with an ace. The set was now at 24-24. Another serve by Vicky gave GB the lead, and forced the Polish coach to call a time out. A good time out as Poland brought the scores back to 25-25, but a error and then a point for GB levelled the scores at 1 set all. Poland, disheartened for the subsequent sets, with GB with the momentum won the next two sets rather comfortably. Congratulations to GB for their first win of the tournament.

China men have been quite impressive coming out of their pool but were set to play against a tough Egypt. In the second set, Egypt were forced to make several mistakes as the Chinese team look fluid and together to win the 2nd set. The third set, China lead in both technical time-outs, but some silly lifting at important times changed the set as Egypt crawled back into the match taking the 3rd set, and looked very convincing in the 4th set.

With Finland’s head coach Timo Vare already back at home due to work commitments, assistant coach Eava-Liisa Hilden took the responsibility of being head coach. Furthermore, key minimal disabled player Maria Vitala also had to return home to look after her young family, left Finland with only one substitute and the first time on the court for Raisa Moller. Slovenia service consisted a lot of top spin service and dominated in the sets.

In the fourth set, Germany kept on coming back to try to take the match into a fifth set decider. At 23-23, Bosnia attacked, touching the ball off the block. Germany’s set their line defence with Christoph Herzog positioned already off the court in anticipation to retrieve such a ball. In his attempt, he slide/shuffled/moved all the way to the end of the end zone and played the ball, but was not so lucky with the touch as it’s trajectory was not well enough to keep the ball in play. With that, Bosnia had match point, and converted it after successfully defending Germany’s side out attempt.

Both teams entered the match unbeaten, and in the stadium some people thought this is the championship match. USA have demonstrated excellent knowledge of the court with a team comprising of some relatively new and young players. Russia on the other hand have also been working hard setting a strong impression at the recent Crossroads Open. At times Russia, despite their height and strength at the net, were unable to score points.

A very tight first set, and Brazil came out lucky winners. The second set looked like Brazil would continue to take the second set, but Russia changed their setter to a set of established hands of Sergey Yukunin and he transformed the team’s ability to win the second set and comfortably take the 3rd set. I left after this, and Brazil managed to overturn their loses to make a historic leap to go to the semi-finals.

At match at the same time as the other Brazilian game, made it difficult to concentrate on either match. At the beginning of the second and third set, Germany were able to hold onto their own, but at the crucial times, Brazil pushed to get the set.
